Kilchoman Machir Bay is the base product of Kilchoman, a distillery founded in 2005, the first built in Islay (the fifth scottish island considering the surface) in the last 120 years. Part of the barley used comes from the Kilchoman factory. This distiller nowadays is one of the smallest in Scotland: the production is limited to 120.000 liters in one year. Machir Bay is one of the most beautiful beach in Islay and it’s located to less than 1 kilometer from the distillery. From it this whisky take its name.

It is matured for a little more than five years in ex burbon barrels and for other six months in Oloroso sherry butts. The total aging is around 6 years.

Nose: at first, peaty notes get to the nose, followed by spices (white pepper and cinnamon). Vanilla and hints of red fruits are the last to show off.

Palate: yellow fruit (pear and apple), together with peat, vanilla and white pepper, alternates. There is also a litlle bit of liquorice, that complete the aromatic profile.

Finish: average persistence. Peaty and marine notes, vanilla and spices.

Even if this is the entry level from Kilchoman distillery, the maturation in burbon and sherry casks gives life to a very balanced whisky. The peat is not overwhelming but it’ present and gives character to this scotch. Perfect to start enjoying peaty malts, but not only.
